Litter fragment size can be determined using the Macrolitter Fragment Sizing Chart as in the example below.
It can also be measured without the chart by using a ruler or measuring tape, but this may take very long. The chart is set up to scale when printed on an A1-sized paper. If you are not interested in the size of fragments, then it is not necessary to measure and record the sizes. Fragments can simply be recorded as e.g., Hard Plastic Fragment
To find the fragment size range, litter fragments are placed in the centre of the circle along their longest dimension. The circle that encloses the entire fragment is then the size range of the fragment.
For example, the “hard plastic fragment” in the red block is 5 – 10 cm whereas the “fabric fragment” in the green block falls in the 10 – 25 cm category.
