Describe what you are expecting them to do and how they should be doing it.
Define the study site (e.g., where are the boundaries of the study site), including the different sections of the site (described in detail under Beach Morphology).
When you are doing multiple-day clean-ups:
It is advisable to use the same helpers if possible.
There are a few reasons for this:
It will save you time on continuously training new helpers,
It will allow the helpers to gain experience which increases accuracy and efficiency,
It will reduce observer bias – different people have different abilities to spot litter.
The categorisation of the litter becomes a skill, the accuracy of which builds with time and experience.
At least one person that helped clean the beach should be involved with the litter processing. This helps to clear up any confusion during the processing stage.
Ensure that you keep a list of your helpers’ names and contact details.
It is useful to have their cellphone numbers handy, as you may need to contact them on short notice to change plans.
It is recommended to use WhatsApp, Telegram, or similar applications for group communications.
Remember to follow local laws regarding storing private information of others.
