At the end of this unit, learners will gain a clear understanding of the following:

  1. The waste management landscape in Africa, some of the challenges governments, its people and the private sectors face in their attempts to reduce the incidence of plastic waste pollution.
  2. The concept of sustainable waste management and be able to develop a framework to create sustainable waste management strategies and plans.
  3. The waste hierarchy and how it can be used to help reduce the impacts of plastic waste pollution in Africa.
  4. The critical role the informal waste collection sector plays in developing a sustainable waste management system and how some countries have successfully included the informal waste sector.
  5. Cities that have successfully transitioned their waste management systems into sustainable, zero waste lifestyles.
