This course has been created using the Educator’s Guide to Marine Litter for Western Indian Ocean Countries as a platform.

The guide was developed by SST through collaboration with experts across the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region. The experts were consulted to get a better understanding of how the use of plastics and their management are addressed in their schools’ curricula.
The results of this research showed a need for educator capacity-building to strengthen their knowledge and understanding of marine plastic pollution and ocean sustainability.
These booklets were developed to help meet the education and capacity-building needs of educators and learners regarding the issues of marine plastic pollution in Africa. They have been divided into a series of three booklets namely:
Booklet 1 – An Introduction to Marine Litter Pollution.
Booklet 2 – An Activity Guide – with activities in a variety of fonts to ensure wider accessibility.
Booklet 3 – National Curricula – with curricula links to Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa, and Tanzania.
This course is based on Booklet 1 and contains an introduction to provide teachers with the relevant theory about the subject.
The course also expands upon the booklet with the addition of top teaching tips and relevant video content.
Teachers can use this course to develop notes and lessons for their students. It can also be used to construct fun and exciting practical activities that teach students how to reduce plastic waste where they live and learn.
Our goal is that teachers become confident with using the knowledge gained in this course to further grow their students’ understanding of plastics and marine litter.
Note: Once all modules of the course are completed, teachers will be able to proceed to the Activity Guide and National Curricula.
